HISTORY
Team History
Rowing in Lithuania, as well as at Vilnius University, has long-standing traditions. Already in the post-war years, a group of enthusiasts actively began to practice and promote this sport. Many notable Lithuanian rowers graduated from Vilnius University. Among them is Antanas Bagdonavičius – a medalist at three Olympic Games (Rome 1960, Tokyo 1964, Mexico City 1968). Petras Karla also became a medalist at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Povilas Liutkaitis, Eugenijus Levickas, and Celestinas Jocys were participants in those Games. In 1980, Jonas Pinskus won a medal at the Moscow Olympics, while Sigitas Kučinskas competed at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.
Rowing at Vilnius University was especially popular during the 1960–1990 period. At that time, as many as four coaches worked at the university, training camps were organized, and the university had its own rowing base on the shore of Lake Skaistys.
Today, the Vilnius University rowing team is a frequent champion of the Lithuanian University Rowing Championships. For several years in a row, rower Milda Valčiukaitė, a student of the Faculty of Communication, was voted the best athlete of Vilnius University. Together with her crew partner Donata Vištartaitė, she was named the best Lithuanian women’s team for two consecutive years (in the Lithuanian National Olympic Committee awards). The pair won bronze medals at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and are also medalists at the World and European Championships.
