For several years, the sports hall of Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) has been home to the Lithuanian Student Sambo Championship. On October 25, the best athletes from seven higher education institutions competed there. Vilnius University was represented by as many as 15 athletes at the championship.

The participants were welcomed by Indrė Čelkienė, President of the Lithuanian Student Sports Association, and Linas Obcarskas, President of the Lithuanian Sambo Federation, who wished the athletes honorable matches, strength, and success on the tatami.

After the ceremonial student anthem Gaudeamus igitur was performed, the chief referee introduced the athletes to the championship format and rules.

The boys and girls competed in the following weight categories:

Mens’ weight categories: under 58 kg, 64 kg, 71 kg, 79 kg, 88 kg, 98 kg, +98 kg.

Womens’ weight categories: under 50 kg, 54 kg, 59 kg, 65 kg, 72 kg, 80 kg, +80 kg.

In the womens’ weight categories, Vilnius University students became champions:

54 kg – Anna Luca Fonyodi (Faculty of Medicine)

72 kg – Valerie Marie Cordon (Faculty of Medicine)

In the mens’ weight categories, the following Vilnius University students became champions:

79 kg – Deividas Jovsa (Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics)

+98 kg – Titas Laurinavičius (Business School)

 

This year, the Vilnius University womens’ and mens’ teams, led by Eimantas Tukačiauskas, swept their rivals in the overall team standings and brought home two champions’ trophies to Vilnius.

2nd place – Mykolas Romeris University, coach Algis Mečkovskis

3rd place – Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, coach Algirdas Šulinskas

 

Men’s Team standings

1st place – Vilnius University, coach Eimantas Tukačiauskas

2nd place – Vytautas Magnus University, coach Petras Vinciūnas

3rd place – Kaunas University of Technology, coach Gintaras Aleknavičius
