ABOUT THE TEAM
Everyone is welcome to join Judo and SAMBO training sessions! It doesn’t matter if you’ve never been introduced to the basics of judo or SAMBO before — there’s a place here for everyone. Beginners will learn how to defend themselves and others, build physical and mental strength, and discover new sports. More experienced participants at the University can continue to train successfully, deepen their knowledge, and represent the University at Lithuanian University Student Championships, SELL Games, and other championships and international tournaments.

HISTORY
TEAM HISTORY
Official judo competitions began in Lithuania in 1972, and at Vilnius University in 1973. The first judo coaches were European Youth bronze medalist V. Kairys, A. Kliševičius, and V. Litvaitis. Judo activities at the university were suspended from 1992 to 1997. In 1998, thanks to the initiative of Prof. J. Jankauskas and Lithuanian SAMBO Federation President P. Eigminas, the judo section was reinstated. From 1998 until autumn 2016, VU judo students were coached by Dr. Remigijus Naužemys (2nd Dan black belt in judo).
VU students successfully advance their KYU qualifications, annually taking mastery exams to earn higher belt ranks. The best male judo wrestlers of all time at VU include V. Kairys, A. Žičkus, J. Čivylis, J. Ivoška, E. Jestrenskas, V. Strelanas, O. Detiukevič, A. Molis, D. Vėžauskas, A. Antanaitis, M. Moceikenis, D. Sokolas, P. Banevičius, V. Mostovojus, P. Gruodis, K. Olechnovič; among the women: A. Motiejauskaitė, R. Tekoriūtė, V. Vaitiekūnaitė, L. Grušelionytė, K. Baužaitė, E. Banevičiūtė, V. Muraškaitė, I. Eimutytė, I. Urbonavičiūtė, I. Siniauskaitė, D. Enzelytė, S. Jakubynaitė, R. Aksionova, V. Markauskaitė, D. Olencevičiūtė.
VU judo wrestlers actively participate in various competitions, championships, tournaments, and SELL Games, often achieving high rankings in both individual and team categories.
The Vilnius University SAMBO section was founded in 1956 by a student of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, Viktoras Kravčenka. From 1957, Pranciškus Eigminas led the SAMBO wrestling section and coached enthusiasts. Besides P. Eigminas, other coaches who taught SAMBO to university students include V. Jarmašauskas, R. Gečas, J. Kulikauskas, A. Eigminas, and R. Naužemys.
Vilnius University SAMBO wrestlers actively compete in various levels of competitions: Vilnius City and Lithuanian Championships, SELL Games, and since 2000, in Lithuanian Higher Education Institutions student competitions and World Student SAMBO Championships.
