HISTORY
TEAM HISTORY
In the 1980s, dance aerobics from the USA and rhythmic gymnastics from gymnastics schools not only spread the health-oriented direction of aerobics in Lithuania but also provided a strong impetus for the beginning of sports aerobics.
At Vilnius University, health aerobics took its first steps in 1981, pioneered by Prof. E. Morkūnienė. She was supported by gymnasts O. Skvorcova, V. Kazlauskienė, and choreographer R. Pilkauskienė. From 1984, the work started by Prof. E. Morkūnienė was continued by balletmaster-teacher T. Kriščiokaitytė-Gritėnienė.
The start of aerobic gymnastics in Lithuania is considered to be the 1992 Higher Education Institutions Aerobics Competition.
These competitions were organized by the then Institute of Physical Culture (coach R. Baublienė), the Veterinary Academy (coach J. Bartaškienė), and Kaunas Medical University (coach I. Plioplienė), with participation from Vilnius Pedagogical Institute (coach L. Mikutienė) and Vilnius University (coach T. Gritėnienė).
Aerobic gymnastics is a new and continuously evolving sport requiring exceptional talent, diligence, high athlete mastery, and stage choreographic skills. Athletes perform high-intensity movement compositions in a very short time (1.30 minutes) to dynamic music. Judging considers not only the difficulty elements demonstrating flexibility, agility, static strength, and athletic endurance but also artistry, musicality, and charisma. Competitions include women's solo, men's solo, mixed doubles, trios, and group (5 persons) routines. All these events contribute to the team score. Both individual and team responsibility are very important in this sport.
The Vilnius University aerobic gymnastics team has competed in the main league since 1992. A large number of excellent athletes and professionals have been discovered and developed! World Championship participant (G. Norviliūtė 2002, Faculty of Physics), European Championship participant (J. Rybakova-Prosianikova, Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, 2007), SELL Games champions (O. Meleško, O. Pozlevič, J. Konstantinovaitė, G. Norviliūtė, G. Jagalavičiūtė, G. Bingelytė in 2003), as well as SELL Games 2015 champions Edvinas Navakauskas and Greta Bružytė.
The VU team regularly participates in international competitions and is a multiple Lithuanian Higher Education Institutions champion (2005, 2009, 2011, 2013) and prize winner. They were prize winners in Lithuanian aerobic gymnastics in 2014 and 2015 and team champions in 2016.
Student volunteer activities in the sports sector are an integral part of personal development. Lifelong improvement is encouraged – especially relevant in their professional careers. The practical significance of aerobics, the aesthetic education of students, and the development of physical self-discipline skills have become undeniably evident, improving students' physical condition and personal development. For twenty-six years, students at Vilnius University who are motivated and suitably skilled, having received the basics of the sport, have represented their Alma Mater at international and national competitions.
