HISTORY
Team History
Vilnius University has always had strong weightlifters, including some of international level, who have become Lithuanian champions and prize-winners. The training of the weightlifting team intensified significantly from 1976 when Master of Sports Rimantas Cijūnėlis started coaching. Thanks to his enthusiasm, a training base was established, and the necessary equipment was acquired.
The university’s weightlifting team annually becomes a winner and prize-winner of higher education, national, and international competitions. A historic milestone was the 1979 Lithuanian Higher Education Championships, where the weightlifting team won the championship title, coinciding with the university’s 400th anniversary celebration.
All-time top weightlifters representing the university include A. Apulskis, B. Stulpinas, V. Janulis, V. Sabataitis, V. Dovgiala, S. Naidič, J. Novikovas, V. Tomas, B. Ivanovas, J. Andriušaitis, I. Kačinovič, Z. Ravluševič, D. Šlapelis, G. Bareikis, K. Mačionis, L. Šverčiauskas, J. Klikna, E. Kaupas, A. Arutiunian, D. Stulgys, and others.
The university’s powerlifting athletes are multiple-time champions and prize-winners of Lithuanian higher education and SELL Games competitions. Notable weightlifters of all time include A. Malinauskas, R. Šimkūnas, R. Dzeventkaukas, D. Lučiūnas, A. Tamošiūnas, S. Voitinovičius, A. Mačiulis, R. Aleksejev, R. Žuravliovas, A. Kondratavičius, M. Jaras, M. Morkūnas, O. Kaminskas, R. Guzulaitis, A. Kairys, N. Strelkauskis, R. Radžiūnas, J. Vėžys, K. Šimonis, G. Vaitukaitis, A. Arutiunian, and others.
The powerlifting team is also a multiple-time winner and prize-winner of Lithuanian higher education and youth championships. Lithuanian adult champions include T. Matulas, A. Ratkevičius, and T. Svetikas. Among the best powerlifters representing the university are A. Malinauskas, R. Aleksejevas, T. Matulas, V. Regelskis, F. Tamonis, A. Audickas, A. Ratkevičius, G. Janušonis, J. Klikna, D. Stulgys, and others.
